About 50 years ago DeCoti-March wrote a book to first link potassium to arthritis. In this book he claimed many cases in histories that potassium showed to be beneficial to relieve pain in arthritis patients. He then formed a foundation in England that encouraged people to use potassium supplements in order to bring cell potassium up to normal and has helped about 3500 people. Currently potassium is also connected to other drugs that have given a good response in similar diseases.

Another successful technique was conducted with a raw vegetable diet described by Holbrook in Europe during the 40s. This diet was actually very successful however many people did not find it pleasurable. Eppinger suggested that the success of this diet might have been because of the high potassium that it contained. This diet might have been even more popular if Holbrook would have added cooked vegetables, soups, or to drink the boiled water of the vegetables. These alternatives would have also allowed the same potassium intake as raw vegetables. Kjeldsen-Kragh wanted to explore why the raw diet worked and he explored the effect of a vegetarian diet. He found that after fasting, in some patients with rheumatoid arthritis, followed by a vegetarian diet had a favorable influence on the disease activity. This phenomenon has not been explained entirely, but fasting should not be prolonged because the muscles that are wasting during arthritis are in danger.

Anther author of arthritis diets, Jarvis, stresses that honey and vinegar are extremely beneficial because of its low potassium, making it counter productive. The vinegar may be beneficial because if well fed people are having a hard time to metabolize all of the acetate ions or if the acetate is being excreted by the kidneys before it had a chance to begin its entrance to the cells. Also, he suggests that Kombucha a vinegar ferment, can be very helpful for arthritis.
