According to a new Belgian study, glucosamine and chondroitin help lower the pain as well as improving the functions of the knees in Osteoarthritis (OA) and are very safe. John Klippel, M.D. who is the medical director of the Arthritis Foundation, says glucosamine is so great because it lowers cartilage loss and slows the progression of OA. In one study, glucosamine showed to reduce arthritis knee pain and disability 20% to 25% in patients taking 1,500 milligrams of glucosamine on a daily bases for 3 years. Although, glucosamine and chondroitin are typically used together, Klippel says that there is no proof that they work better together than alone.

In addition, glucosamine sulfate, when taking 500 mg of it three times a day, can also relieve the pain of temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ). TMJ is a type of osteoarthritis of the jaw which usually affects younger people.

In other studies, the natural form of sulfur compound SAM-e was just as effective as NSAIDs was. The recommended dosages for Sulfur compound SAM-2 is 600 mg to 1,200 mg per day and only use it under the supervision of a doctor. Although methyl-sulfonyl-methane is widely promoted and consumed, there currently isn’t a controlled study to show that this sulfur component will relieve OA in humans.

Klippel also said that research also indicates that vitamins and antioxidants like vitamin c can protect against OA. In addition, losing weight will cut down the risks of developing OA in the knees and hips. Analysis shows that overweight middle-aged women who lost 11 pounds over a ten year period basically slashed their risks of knee osteoarthritis in half.

Bet supplements in fish oil is great in rheumatoid arthritis patients because it is an anti-inflammatory substance, relieves pain, and stiffness. In a study conducted, patients saw improvements after 12 weeks. The usual dose is 3,000 mg of EPA/DHA, the active ingredients in fish oil, which is high but is safe when taken under the supervision of a doctor. This dosage can make the blood thinner and reacts with other medications.

New finding have linked arthritis to not only poor diet or obesity, but instead to the general state of the immune system. A protein in the immune system that causes malfunctions in patients who have arthritis or other inflammatory diseases have been found by researchers. It is believed by doctors that they may clog this protein to limit the need for steroids.

Compare to previous generations, it has been observed by the researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center that there are more cases of arthritis involved with obese baby boomers. As the population ages so does the number of people with arthritis.

There are a few ways anyone can take to offset arthritis without medication. Since what we eat frequently plays a big role in how arthritis will start then to prevent it, it’s important to eat healthy. Unfortunately, the average North American diet contains high amounts of cooked, processed and other acid forms which make it hard to keep a healthy diet. A healthy diet should contain at least 70% alkaline and 30% acidic.

A diet containing mostly raw, fresh vegetables, fruits and reduced in the intake of meats is the best way to reduce inflammation in the body. Avoiding foods that from acids in your body will help ease the arthritis symptoms with out the use of medication. Foods that don’t produce acids in the body include corn, honey, oatmeal, peanuts, rice, soy, pasta, and wheat and keep away from saturated fats, like butter, cream, and margarine.

Another great way to protect against arthritis is to consume antioxidants from brightly colored fruits and vegetables. Consuming antioxidants called carotenoids from yellow and orange fruits and vegetables will decrease the chances of developing inflammatory arthritis.

It’s best to build your diet around alkaline forming products such as berries, bananas, raisins, avocado, carrots, grapes, plums, broccoli, and much more. The key thing to remember when choosing a diet is to focus on vegetables and not so much on proteins. Finally, hydration is an absolute most to avoid a lot of arthritis symptoms.

Lately a lot of people are seeking natural remedies to treat diseases such as arthritis instead of taking prescription medication. Most of the alternatives available can help relief arthritis pain.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin are two of the most popular natural relief for arthritis. These supplements are found in the body naturally and help promoting joint health and improvement. Glucosamine also helps in delaying the progression of the disease and has also been shown to relieve symptoms even after weeks after ending the treatment. Chondroitin acts like a liquid magnet because it attracts water into the cartilage matrix and thus stimulating the production of cartilage. Some studies have shown positive results from the long term use of chondroitin by lowering pain and increasing range of motion.

Methylsufonyl-methane (MSM) is a natural occurring sulfur compound which helps reduce swelling and acts as an anti-inflammatory. MSM has a similar affect like vitamins because it promotes normal growth and repairs damaged mechanisms in the body. The proper amount of MSM will help our bodies to build good and healthy cells.

Manganese is an excellent antioxidant nutrient. It facilities enzymes and slows the aging process making it very useful to treat rheumatoid arthritis. It is recommended to consume about 30 mg on a daily bases. However, it is important to consult a physician before starting any new treatment.

Niacinamide, commonly known as Vitamin B3 is great to preserve the state of the cells and tissues thus, slowing the advancement of arthritis. Studies on Vitamin B3 has shown to prevent nitric oxide production which means it gives cartilage cells more room to breath. Niacinamide, just to name a few, can be found in carrots, peanuts, whole wheat, and broccoli.

Turmetric and Ginger Extract are herbal extracts that serve as anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant without any major side effects. They have demonstrated to be more effective than NSAIDs in treating rheumatoid arthritis.

These are just some of many natural treatments that can be useful and helpful to treating painful symptoms of arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic and inflammatory autoimmune disorder which causes are unknown. Nearly sixty percent of rheumatoid arthritis patients cannot work after 10 years because of the disorder.

Rheumatoid arthritis name originated from the Greeks. The Greek name for Rheumatoid is actually Rheumatos which means flowing. The suffix –oid stands for resembling. At first rheumatos was associated with rheumatic fever, an illness described as a throat infection that includes joint pain. Therefore, when you add the prefix and suffix you get the definition of a condition involving inflammation. Rheumatoid arthritis got its name because it resembles rheumatic fever. The first description of rheumatoid arthritis is seen in a painting nearly more than a century before Landre-Beauvais described it in detailed in 1800.

Most people associate rheumatoid arthritis to pain and physical limitations because millions of people suffering from this disease all face pain and physical limitations. People who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis usually end up with deformed joints, making the simplest activities undoable, because of the difficulty to manage the pain.

It is unexplainable why rheumatoid arthritis is two to three times more likely to occur in women than in men. A person is generally strike with this condition between the age of 20 and 50. However, rheumatoid is very uncommon in children but it is still probable to occur in children under the age of 16. It is also common for smokers to develop rheumatoid arthritis compared to non - smokers. Finally, family history plays an importance in a person risk to developing rheumatoid arthritis. Although the causes for rheumatoid arthritis are unknown it has been suspected for a long time that it is an infectious disease and might be due to food allergies or outside organisms.

Currently there is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis, but there are many treatments that can be used. With the right treatment, a person suffering from rheumatoid arthritis can live a very long and productive life.

Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA), affecting 50,000 children in the USA, is a condition that causes joint inflammation and stiffness for longer than 6 weeks in children age 16 or younger. The first signs to look out for are joint pain, swelling, and reddened or warm joints.

Three major types of JRA includes, Poly-articular arthritis (affecting mostly girls. The major symptom include swelling or pain in 5 or more joints, a low grade fever may occur and bumps on the body can appear in areas where sitting or leaning is common.), Pauciarticular JRA (affects four or less joints. Some symptoms include pain, stiffness, or swelling in the joints. The most common joints affected are on the knees and wrists. It is very likely that a person will experience an inflammation of the iris with or without active joint symptoms.), and Systemic JRA (affecting the entire body, and includes high fevers, which usually increase during the evening and then may suddenly drop to normal thus, resulting in a pale complexion and rash. The rash is very distinctive because it may suddenly disappear and reappear mysteriously. In addition the body’s joint can ultimately be affected by swelling, pain, and stiffness).

The exact cause of JRA is currently unknown. However, research has showed that this is an autoimmune disease, meaning that the white blood cells lose the capacity to recognize the difference between the body’s own healthy cells and harmful cells. The immune system, as a result, releases chemicals that may harm healthy tissues and cause inflammation and pain opposed to defend the body from hurtful intruders.

In order for a child to maintain a healthy active and productive lifestyle while having JRA, it is important for the child to be diagnosed and treated promptly. This way, both the parent and the child can understand what the symptoms are and how to treat them.

When children suffer pain from JRA their first reaction is to sit or lay still, however the best medicine is to stay active. Being active helps good range of motion to keep the muscles strong and healthy in order to support and protect the joints. Before starting an exercise program, it’s important to consult a doctor and physical therapist about sports restrictions.

Rheumatoid Arthritis can be described as a chronic and inflammatory autoimmune disorder which causes the immune system to ultimately attack the body’s joints. This causes symptoms such as joint stiffness, particularly on the hands or feet, some cases both. Other symptoms include arthritis and swelling of the soft tissues, symmetric arthritis, and radiological changes indicated by joint erosion.

What separates rheumatoid arthritis from other joint disorders is that the pain is generally worse in the morning compared to later in the day. Therefore, the pain will decrease when the affected joint is used during the day. Some general indications to look out for is stiffness that lasts more than an hour, or swelling and pain that last up to or longer than six weeks becuase they can indicate rheumatoid arthritis. When rheumatoid arthritis is in its early stages symptoms may include fever, excessive fatigue, and even pea-sized lumps which can be felt under the skin known as nodules. Along with the symptoms described earlier, one can also expect to experience anemia, a decrease in appetite, and increment of fluid in the ankles or behind the knees.

Rheumatoid arthritis is also described as a multi-systemic disease because most patients also suffer anemia due to either the disease alone or of a side effect of a drug used in treating rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, children can also develop rheumatoid arthritis, their symptoms may include, trembling shivers and a pink rash which may be followed by painful and swollen joints.

The most probable cause for the pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis is the irritation of other tissues in and around the joints which are being affected. The irritation can be due to a chemical-messenger substance like prostaglandin E2. Therefore it is important for people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis to take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to help reduce the pain. These types of drugs inhibit the production of prostaglandins making the pain to decrease.
